There is a plethora of research highlighting the benefit of peer feedback to students learning. Research on teaching and learning has confirmed it helps students become active learners, increases critical thinking and reflection skills and increases their self regulation of their learning (Butler and Winnie, 1995; Dochy, Segers, & Sluijsmans, 1999 Liu, & Carless, 2006). Fewer studies have focused on the use of peer feedback in communication skills development. Kelly Allison and Marie Nightbird, Instructors in the School of Social Work, will share their experience with using CLAS (Collaborative Learning and Annotation System) as a tool for peer feedback in a BSW level communications skills class. Participants in the session can look forward to learning about how CLAS was integrated into a peer feedback assignment for skill-based learning. We will discuss the successes of using this technology, some of the challenges and inspire you to think about how you could use CLAS and peer feedback in skill-based teaching and learning.
