Though the transition to online instruction has been abrupt for many in-person courses, UBC has long offered distance education options for language instruction. This panel brings together expertise from Nick Hall, Misuzu Kazama, and Ihhwa Kim (Lecturers of Japanese, ASIA), who have offered two distance education courses for over 8 years in the Department of Asian Studies. The session will cover course design and format, tests and assignments, and alignment with on-campus courses. Drawing on distance education design principles, the presenters will share how they have organized online courses so students can move through them with minimal supervision, as well as how they approach essential elements like speaking and listening practice.
