Beyond Content and Toward Understanding How We Teach Our Disciplines: An Introduction to Signature Pedagogies

DATE
Thursday August 21, 2025
TIME
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Learn how you can apply signature pedagogies to enhance the learning experience for students.

In this workshop, we’ll introduce the concept of Signature Pedagogies, the forms or styles of teaching and instruction that are common in disciplines, areas of study, or professions in a field of study. Signature pedagogies manifest as habits of mind, hand, and heart that underpin the teaching of content in a particular course and major and are often implicit.

Making the signatures of your discipline more explicit for students helps to empower them as they develop the ability to understand and articulate learning from their disciplines to audiences outside of the university, including family, potential employers, and graduate or professional schools. Being explicit about the signatures of your discipline will support your students’ learning and help prepare them for their futures, a core element of the Faculty of Arts’ Mission in our new Strategic Plan.

Workshop participants will have a chance to explore this concept in relation to their own disciplines and work, learn from others in the session, and see examples of how Arts faculty members have made signatures of their disciplines explicit on course syllabi.
