The more instructors get to know Canvas, UBC’s new LMS, the more inventive and exciting their teaching activities become. Get to know how your fellow Faculty of Arts instructors are making full use of Canvas tools in this special event. In addition to inspiration for online teaching possibilities, this collaborative session will also feature ’Appy Hour finger foods and afternoon snacks.
- Neil Armitage, Sessional Instructor in the Department of Sociology, will share how his use of the Canvas mobile app has allowed him to quickly and easily see the bigger picture of his course with on-the-go course analytics, while also managing the everyday of teaching activities with less stress.
- Debbie Dergousoff, Sessional Instructor in the Department of Sociology, has made full use of Canvas Groups to organize her students into groups to allow them to work on collaborative assignments and engage in more meaningful learning activities.
- Arlene Sindelar, Senior Instructor in the Department of History, creates Rubrics in Canvas to clarify assignment expectations with Rubric criterion and explain grading practices with Rubric feedback options. In other words, Arlene puts the instructions in Rubric form so students can self-check their work.
- Kyle Frackman, Assistant Professor of Germanic Studies and Associate Faculty in the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice, has increased the efficiency and effectiveness of the grading process and accuracy of grading recording with Canvas Gradebook.
- Qian Wang, director of the Chinese Language Program and Senior Instructor in the Department of Asian Studies, will share how her program has put their exams entirely online using Canvas Quizzes and the Respondus proctoring tool. This has helped her program ensure consistency across courses while also maintaining exam security and integrity.
- Jonathan Graves, Instructor in the Vancouver School of Economics, will discuss how the Vancouver School of Economics puts shared resources in the Canvas Commons to share make material accessible to instructors across the school. This ability to share resources like course templates, pages, and quizzes, increases flexibility, efficiency, and enhances collaborative teaching.
