Prepare for changes coming to videos in Canvas

To create a better experience for you and your students while using videos in Canvas and to improve the sustainability of the Kaltura platform, UBC is moving Kaltura videos hosted at UBC into the Kaltura cloud during the month of April 2023.

Kaltura is UBC’s primary platform for capturing, managing, and sharing academic videos and is widely used by UBC faculty, staff, and students.

The migration will have minimal impact on courses this term and your students will not lose access to your Kaltura videos at any point—students will be able to view, comment on, and take quizzes for your videos as they normally would.

The only impact on your courses this term is that UBC strongly recommends not changing/editing your Kaltura videos or metadata during the month of April.

If you create Kaltura videos, it is recommended to:

  • Now–April 1: Plan any changes/edits to your Kaltura videos before April 1, since UBC does not recommend making any changes to Kaltura videos during the migration in the month of April. If you must change a Kaltura video in April, you can use the “Save a Copy” option to make a copy first.
  • Now–April 30: Download any Kaltura video data that you’d like to save, such as video analytics, video quiz results, video comments, and video clip references, before April 30.
  • May 1–October 1: Update any existing Kaltura video links that are shared outside of Canvas with the new links between May 1 to October 1. For Kaltura videos shared within Canvas, UBC will be automatically updating those links so you do not need to adjust anything within Canvas.
