CLAS Updates: HTML5 Release & Manage Page Improvements

View the current updates made to the Collaborative Learning Annotation System (CLAS), including the release of HTML5 and improvements to the “Manage” page, effective December 7, 2020.

HTML5 Release

Since Adobe will be ending its support of Flash at the end of 2020, CLAS will be replacing its video recorder with an HTML5 version starting December 7, 2020. Currently, most websites are using technologies like HTML5 to provide improved security, reduced power consumption, and faster page load times.

With the release of HTML5 in CLAS, users will still be able to leave video responses on the “Watch and Discuss” page and playback video and audio recordings. A new feature will allow users to record video within CLAS using their webcam to respond to comments. However, technical limitations to the Safari browser prevent users from recording video responses with their webcam.

Improvements

  • New: Record by webcam within CLAS (not applicable for Safari)
  • Bug fixes: Playback video and audio recordings (applicable for all browsers)

Manage Page Improvements: Adding Users

Similar to Canvas, the functionality to add students/users is connected to SIS to ensure that all students enrolled in a course are added to the corresponding CLAS course.

Instructors will now notice that the option to manually add users individually and the option to invite users by sharing a link have been removed from the “Manage” page. If you wish to manually add new students/users, please contact your support team.

Manage Page Improvements: UI Updates

There have been some User Interface (UI) updates to the “Manage” page to help improve the experience while updating your settings for your CLAS course.
