Practical Strategies for Student Management in Medium to Large Classes: Engagement, Assessments, and Feedback (August 6, 2020)

Moving to online instruction has introduced a number of new questions around student engagement: How can we maintain relationships with our students in a virtual environment? How can instructors balance growing grading loads with the need for high frequency, low stakes assessments? How is pre-course preparation different for online teaching, and who do we contact for help? In this webinar, Silvia Bartolic (Associate Professor of Teaching & Undergraduate Chair in the Department of Sociology) will be sharing practical strategies for managing students in an online environment. Attendees will learn about techniques that encourage and maintain student engagement, recommendations for course design that help reduce grading loads and maximize efficiency, and tips for optimizing teaching assistant support in the online classroom, using tools like Canvas, OnTask, and iPeer. The session will also provide a checklist of important pre-course tasks to complete before September in preparation for remote instruction.
