Tools that are not supported or hosted by UBC are considered third-party tools, and include applications like Google Workspace, Slack, and Kritik. Many are not compliant with the privacy requirements that help us maintain security and confidentiality in an increasingly virtual learning environment. UBC is governed by the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), which ensures that we collect, use, and disclose personal information in a lawful and appropriate manner.
If you are interested in using a third-party tool, first contact Arts ISIT to describe your needs so we can identify existing options at the university. UBC-approved tools are FIPPA-compliant and supported by Arts ISIT, which ensures you can receive the training and help you need to bring them to your classrooms.
Although vendors may contact instructors directly about using their tools, all tools must undergo a Privacy Impact Assessment by Safety & Risk Services before they can be approved for use.
