In May/June of this year, the Dean of Arts Office, in collaboration with Arts ISIT, created an Arts Student Learning Experience Survey for students enrolled in Arts courses during 2021 Winter Term 1 and Term 2.
The purpose of this survey to review student learning experiences in the different online, in-person, and hybrid teaching environments they experienced over the past year. We wanted to gain further understanding for student preferences around classroom learning activities and recorded lectures. We aimed to identify factors that encourage student engagement and motivate them to learn. We also wanted to find out more about why there was an increase in the number of students who withdrew from classes over the course of the year.
A total of 1,456 students from all year-levels and disciplines completed the survey. Students were asked about their preferences around:
- Recorded lectures and development of classroom environment
- Their most and least engaging classes and the factors that impacted their engagement
- Any courses they dropped and the reasons that influenced this decision
We encourage Arts instructors to review this report on the Faculty of Arts AIR site to learn more about our findings and the pedagogical discussion points that were crafted by Arts ISIT.
