iPeer

Integrate peer evaluations into group work or team-based learning activities.

iPeer is a web application that allows instructors to create and manage intragroup peer evaluations for group projects or activities. Its integration with Canvas makes it easy to set up peer evaluation activities for student groups or assignments in any format.

iPeer differs from other peer review systems in that it focuses on assessing team member contributions, rather than individual assignment submissions. It is often difficult for instructors to assess individual student contributions in collaborative group projects. With iPeer evaluations, students will be able to provide feedback on the contributions of their fellow group members using specific criteria set out by the instructor.

Making the standards of evaluation known to students from the beginning of the group activity helps to encourage group participation, collaboration and meaningful contributions from all group members.


Features

IPeer offers three types of evalutions that you can customize and functions that work seamlessly with Canvas.

Three types of evaluation formats

  1. Simple Evaluations: The instructor sets up a simple point scale to allow students to score their team members’ contributions and provide open-ended comments
  2. Rubrics Evaluations: The instructor establishes a rubric so students can rate and comment on their group members’ contributions according to specific criteria
  3. Mixed Evaluations: Students evaluate group members’ contributions using a combination of Likert, dropdown, sentence, or paragraph question types

Canvas integration and evaluation options

  • Integrated with Canvas, allowing instructors to import Groups, different Group Sets, class lists and to export ratings to Canvas Gradebook
  • Allows students in groups to evaluate each other’s contributions to group work set up in Canvas or offline
  • Self-evaluations can be enabled with the option for customized questions geared toward self-reflection
  • Instructors can download evaluation results for review, analysis or grading
  • Allows for automated evaluation release dates and optional result release date

If you are an instructor or a TA and have never used iPeer, contact us to have your iPeer account created before accessing iPeer.

If you are a TA and have previously used iPeer, your account settings will need to be updated by Arts ISIT as well.

iPeer Courses can only be created by assigned instructors. TAs will be able to assist with administration after they have been added to the iPeer course by the instructor.

  1. Log into iPeer at https://ipeer.elearning.ubc.ca.
  2. Go to Courses from the navigation menu at the top of the page
  3. Click +Add Course Based on Canvas at the top right corner
  4. Select your course from the drop-down menu
  5. Click Next
  6. Fill in the fields (some will be auto-populated, so confirm the information is correct)
    • Instructors/Tutor – after additional instructors or tutors (TAs) have created iPeer accounts, they will appear in the drop-down menu
    • Department – Be sure to select Arts. This will allow Arts ISIT staff access to your iPeer course to troubleshoot when needed
  7. Click Save
