Interview

What year did you begin to work at Arts ISIT?

2024

Describe what you do at Arts ISIT

I work with Faculty and Staff to support the Teaching and Learning Experience in Arts. This involves; providing support and training on available education technology, developing resources and streamlining operational workflows for the Learning Centre, developing tools to ease Faculty pain points while dealing with the ever changing technical environment of UBC.

I also work closely with our LTRs (student staff) to coordinate the support provided by the Learning Centre.

What is the best thing about the work you do at Arts ISIT?

I graduated with a Computer Science and Statistics degree but hated the fact that most jobs for my field involved working in a back office somewhere, never interacting with clients. So working directly with Faculty at the Learning Centre is one of my favourite parts of the job. You get to meet a lot of incredibly interesting and talented people!

I also love mentoring our student staff and helping them get used to a professional working environment.

What are your areas of expertise?

  • Learning Technologies
  • Programming
  • Pedagogy

Which services does your work relate to?

Please list some related projects/tools/resources you work on

  • UDL Redesign (ASIA 398): Developed a mechanism for collaborative notetaking using the Cornell notes template. I am also working with the instructor to develop instructional materials and ensure the course follows Universal Design for Learning (UDL) best practices.
  • Workday FGST Conversion Macro: Developed a Macro which reformats a Canvas Gradebook export so it is ingestible by Workday’s Final Grade Submission Tool.
  • Canvas Scripts Maintenance and Migration: Setup and maintain a repository of scripts that use the Canvas API to automate time consuming tasks an instructor (or the Learning Centre) might need to do. Some examples include Staggering student start times for exams, auto-grading discussions participations.

Can you share some of your personal interests or hobbies?

  • The Great Outdoors: I love all things nature related! Hiking and camping in the summer are my favourite parts of living in Vancouver. My friends are trying to convince me to do a Fondo this year. Personally, I feel like I’ll start sliding back down the sea to sky highway halfway to Whistler.
  • Foodie: Spend a lot of time trying out new restaurants/cafes across the city (I’m always taking suggestions).
  • Gaming: Avid FPS gamer since high-school with too many hours spent on Valorant and Rainbow Six Siege. Board games and Poker are my go-to during the winter months when being outdoors seems like a punishment.
