Arts recipients awarded for teaching excellence in 2025/2026



Congratulations to Arts recipients who recently received various teaching and learning awards across UBC!

This spring, several faculty members and teaching assistants in the Faculty of Arts have received annual teaching awards across the university. The awards celebrate achievements in teaching and learning, whether it is through continued excellence in teaching or significant contributions towards enhacing accessibility for students.

Killam Teaching Prize and Graduate Teaching Assistant Award

Awarded annually across UBC, the Killam Teaching Prize celebrates faculty who have been nominated by students, colleagues and alumni. In the Faculty of Arts, six instructors are awarded for demonstrating their teaching excellence in the classroom:

  • Dr. Alifa Bandali (Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice)
  • Dr. Amanda Cheong (Sociology)
  • Dr. David King (Psychology)
  • Dr. Patrick Pennefather (Theatre and Film)
  • Dr. Priti Narayan (Geography)
  • Dr. John Roosa (History)

Three graduate teaching assistants in Arts also received Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award, commended for their teaching excellence by supervisors, colleagues, and students:

  • Avontay Williams (Philosophy)
  • Cody Brown (English Language and Literatures)
  • Kirthana Singh Khurana (First Year & Interdisciplinary Programs)

 

OER Excellence and Impact Awards and Teaching and Learning Champions

OER Awards

Awarded by UBC, the annual UBC Open Educational Resources (OER) Excellence and Impact Awards recognize faculty who materially advance the use and impact of open educational resources in credit courses at UBC. Two Arts faculty members are awarded for their achievements in improving access to educational resources:

  • UBC Vancouver Individual Award: Dr. Jon Beasley-Murray (French, Hispanic and Italian Studies)
  • UBC Vancouver Group Award (co-awarded): Dr. Simon Lolliot (Psychology)

Every year, the Alma Mater Society (AMS) at UBC presents the AMS OER Champions Award to celebrate faculty’s contributions towards enhancing accessibility and affordability for students. In the Faculty of Arts, five faculty members are awarded for their outstanding use of open educational resources (OER) in credit courses:

  • Dr. Arjun Chowdhury (Political Science)
  • Dr. David Green (Economics)
  • Dr. Mark Turin (Anthropology, Critical Indigenous Studies)
  • Dr. Peter Dauvergne (Political Science, International Relations)
  • Dr. Pheroze Unwalla (History)

UDL Champions Award

Awarded by the AMS, the UDL Champions Award recognizes the work of faculty and staff in advocating for Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to foster more inclusive, accessible classrooms. Six Arts faculty members are recognized as UDL Champions:

  • Dr. Florian Gassner (Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies)
  • Dr. Isabel Machado (Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice)
  • Dr. Janet Um (Asian Studies)
  • Dr. Kathleen Hall (Linguistics)
  • Dr. Laura Ishiguro (History, Asian Canadian and Asian Migration Studies)
  • Dr. Terri Givens (Political Science)
