SUMMARY: Beyond Content and Toward Understanding How We Teach Our Disciplin

DESCRIPTION: Learn how you can apply signature pedagogies to enhance the le
arning experience for students.
X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:

Learn how you can apply signat
ure pedagogies to enhance the learning experience for students.
</blockq
uote>
In this workshop\, we’ll introduce the concept of Signature
Pedagogies\, the forms or styles of teaching and instruction that
are common in disciplines\, areas of study\, or professions in a field of
study. Signature pedagogies manifest as habits of mind\, hand\, and heart t
hat underpin the teaching of content in a particular course and major and a
re often implicit.

Making the signatures of your discipline more expl
icit for students helps to empower them as they develop the ability to unde
rstand and articulate learning from their disciplines to audiences outside
of the university\, including family\, potential employers\, and graduate o
r professional schools. Being explicit about the signatures of your discipl
ine will support your students’ learning and help prepare them for their fu
tures\, a core element of the Faculty of Arts’ Mission in our new Strategic
 Plan.

Workshop participants will have a chance to explore this conce
pt in relation to their own disciplines and work\, learn from others in the
session\, and see examples of how Arts faculty members have made signature
s of their disciplines explicit on course syllabi.

Facilitators
